Lovely_Daze27 My name is Kimberly Gates, I am the director at the Bath Area Food Bank. I would like to respond to your post:
I know the food bank does the best they can, but somethings need to be worked on, like food safety. My husband went through the tent today brought home some veggie snack packs, I went to eat one, noticed the best by date on the veggie dip said OCT 05 2025 and the carrots were moldy; it's almost May of 2026. How long are you keeping food for, before giving it away? People in need deserve better than moldy or expired food.
First, I could not agree with you more regarding 'expired food'. If you were to talk to anyone that has volunteered for me in the past 20 years, the one thing I repeat over and over 'if you wouldn't eat it..DON'T put it outside. If you see expired cans outside..it is because they were donated and GSFB tells us that they are still usable, BUT you will NOT find one in your box we send out. DO WE MAKE MISTAKES..good grief I am sure, but we make a conscience effort NOT to provide families, that are already dealing with so much, with expired items. I feel it is important to tell you, every month, my volunteers go thru thousands of pounds of donated produce, baked goods, dairy, Starbucks, and Panara. It takes them hours every morning to sort thru all of this donated food. Things that are not up to par, go into a 'farm box' and those get picked up twice a week. Could they miss an apple or two...yes, it is 1000's of pounds of food, but it is rare. It sounds like you had a store made veggie and dip snack pack...those come directly from our donors and if we don't use them within 4 days...it goes to a farmer...we do not 'save perishable items' from week to week. I have reached out to the generous supermarkets that are so good to us and they have both requested a picture..that would really help them make sure it does not happen again. We do not open the pre-made snack packs as to keep any 'contamination' to a minimum. For your inconvenience, I would be happy to give you a gift card. Please ask for me and I will bring it out.

Period. 🙂
Thank you for all you do Kim. ❤️
I don’t think anyone should be complaining about food they got for free!? Now if u bought it, that’s totally different! People are nuts these days!
Such grace ❤️❤️❤️
Keep up the great work, Kim! ☺️💗
Thank you all for doing all you do!
Keep up the good work Kim. You do a great job and have a wonderful group of volunteers.
Thank you Kim for all your hard work you guys do to help people that are in need of food.I am very grateful that you do this for our community.Rena
You are all doing great work and give so much to your community, Kim. Most people know and appreciate this. And if they have a concern, well, blasting it on Facebook says something about them, not you and your volunteers/employees ❤️ Thanks for all you do!
Thank you Kim and volunteers that work SO hard to help so many
Thank you ,Kim as well as your volunteers for all that you provide to Bath as well as the neighboring communities! You are a true blessing to so many . 💕
If you could watch the volunteers going through the produce every day throwing out the expired or "gone by" food, you would realize that BAFB does a Herculean task of making sure all the food is good to eat. Can something slip by? Sure. But no more than what happens in our own homes.( Or at least in my home! )
I think you do a great job. Negative comments are ridiculous, especially for a program that provides much needed services to anybody who needs it! Thank you Kim and all of the dedicated volunteers for all you do!
When you go to a volunteered food bank, I believe you should be responsible and check the dates. Give expired to the staff and pick something else. The food bank did NOT intend to give those out. Show people grace. It is food to help the community and this person could help by checking before they take it home. Everyone can do their part
This must not be someone who has lived here very long. If they had lived in the area for a few weeks they would have contacted the food bank and not made a shame post (people in need deserve better than moldy or expired food)… Everyone knows that this is one of the best food banks that you will find. Kimberly has always said that if she would not eat it with her family, she will not give it to others. I look forward to seeing the veggie pack expiration and moldy carrots. Like others have said, it is like going to the grocery store. You also have a responsibility to check that the items you are receiving are in good condition. Quite rare at this food bank to find food given out that is not acceptable. *fun fact…Carrots do not mold easily when stored correctly. Surprisingly they are like cheese and you can cut the spots off if the carrot is still firm.
Thank you Kim, you and all your volunteers work so hard. Bath is so lucky to have all of you, keep up the great work you all do 💗
Why is it hard to give away free stuff and help people. Because some people can be ungrateful and complain taking it to Facebook really give me a break. ALL you had to do was throw it away and let the workers and volunteers know what had happened. No one did that on purpose the food is checked when it arrives, while going out and when in the tent when boxes are being consolidated. The food pantry is feeding over 600 families and 95 percent are thankful for BADB.. the 5 percent make it hard for everyone else..try being thankful.. No one is perfect mistakes will be made so do your part be thankful stop this BS ON FACEBOOK..
The Bath food Bank is the best of the Best. They do everything to accommodate people they service. The above note appears to me to be an isolated even and should not deter anyone from participating in the Food Banks services. They are outstanding!

can you please remove this page from your website as it contradicts the information in this post thank you bathfoodbank.org/2020/04/new-food-pantry-hours/
Our numbers are increasing at a rate we have never seen before. We have had to go to handing out a bag to every guest so they all have the same size bag and we can only allow one trip thru the outside structure. Our families can get TWO boxes a month from the food pantry and we had to limit the meat/protein choices to 3 per family. Numbers are going up, and food donations are decreasing...this is a horrible combination. We serve Bath, W. Bath, Woolwich, Phippsburg, Arrowsic and Georgetown. We don't want ANYONE to leave without food no matter where they are from, but the box is a different size for families outside of these areas. We go by the information in our computer system in regards to family size and residency. We will have toiletries available (they are VERY limited) on Tuesday evenings 4-6..we will no longer be supplying anything OTHER than what is in the outside structure from 12-1:30 Tuesdays. We are trying 'new procedures'. THESE PROCEDURES COULD CHANGE. Our goal is to feed as many families and individuals as possible. If you have questions or concerns, please reach out to our director, kimfgates@gmail.com. ... See MoreSee Less

Prepacked boxes are great! In the past I have always loved the surprise. It gets everything moving faster too. Great job pivoting while still serving the community this amazing service.
I appreciate all that you do for us! Especially when help is limited! Blessings.
What items do you need the most?
If we want to donate food do we just drop off anytime?
Your all the very best. Thank you for all you do for us ❤️
Do you have a space filled with these white Shaws reusable bags?? WE COULD REALLY USE THEM! We ask that they are clean and come from a non smoking home. You can drop off at the food bank, 807 Middle Street in Bath. Go to the front double glass door, push the button to the left, the door will open and there is a donation bin inside the lobby. You can drop off 24/7. Thank you in advance, we are going thru @ 75-100 a day! Please, no paper bags. ... See MoreSee Less

A very helpful friend has offered to create and share meals she picked up at the Bath Area Food Bank...Here is her first, Ratatouille.
For the body of the meal:
Zucchini
Tomato
Yellow squash
Eggplant
For the sauce:
Canned tomato sauce
Canned diced tomatoes
Bell pepper
Onion
Ground meat (I used a package of burger patties)
Seasonings can be to preference and availability, but I used salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and adobo on the meat. To the sauce I added parsley, thyme, oregano, rosemary, and red pepper flakes.

Zucchini is a great filler for any meals. I put mine in soups and chili. It makes it stretch a lot farther. It takes on the flavor of everything. This looks amazing thank you for sharing.
Yumm!
This is Jen Hall. Jen came in @ 4 years ago and asked 'Is there a woman here that adopted a Bernese Mountain Dog?' Well...that was our director. Jen had three Berners at the time and she has been with us ever since. She is the volunteer that can do practically everything! Some weeks she volunteers both Tuesday and Thursday. She is fantastic with our families outside and willing to do anything that will help on the inside. Jen volunteers with us and still manages to work at a local bakery. THANK YOU JEN for sticking by us...and helping out in so many different ways. ... See MoreSee Less
